Wychus Overlook Trail Work Day

As you remember, a couple of weeks ago we had a workday out at the new Whychus Creek Overlook.  One of the things we tried to do was harden up the surface of the overlook with bentonite.  That didn’t work as well as we hoped for.  The sandy surface was just to fine to bind well.  So, next Thursday, April 7, we will meet at our usual spot, the SPRD parking area near our kiosk, at 9am for another go at hardening the surface of the overlook.  The FS will bring up a load of 3/8 minus reject rock, and bags of bentonite to mix into that.  They will also bring up a quad with a small dump trailer that can transport the rock and other materials in and out of the overlook.

The plan is to remove about 1” of the current sandy surface and transport that back to the parking area.  Then, we will haul in the 3/8 minus and bentonite and mix that into the remaining sandy surface using a walk behind rototiller. Water will be applied, and then we will compact that with the vibrating plate compactor.  In addition, we will prepare three spots with the 3/8 minus and bentonite where the benches will be placed.  Finally, we will need to prepare the spot near the parking lot where the porta-potty will be located for this season.

Please let us know if you can participate in this endeavor.  We will be working alongside Chris Sabo of the FS and a couple of other FS folks.  If you can help out, please wear work clothes, sturdy boots or good work shoes, bring gloves, sunscreen, and a lunch. We will have the STA trailer up there for tools and hard hats.

Thanks in advance for your help!
